Sardis Sharks Swim Team
General Information
All children of members are invited to participate in the FUN of swim
team. As a member, everyone can perfect their strokes, make new friends,
and participate in an encouraging team environment with the reward of
great physical activity. Our goal is to make swimming fun. We accomplish
this by having dedicated coaches that encourage team unity, special
social events such as the Breakfast of Champions and our end of season
banquet and special surprises throughout the season.
Parental participation is essential for a
successful program:
At least one parent is required to volunteer throughout the season.
There are opportunities to volunteer at meets, practices and other
events. None of the jobs require any outside training except Stroke
Judge. Training is offered for that position. In-house training
will be provided for starter. Volunteer opportunities will be posted
during registration and throughout the season. If you do not sign
up for a specific job, you will be assigned. Reminders will be posted at
the club.
The following information will help swimmers and parents know more about
summer league swimming expectations and the meets…
AGE GROUP CATEGORIES: The age group a swimmer
competes in is determined by the swimmer’s age on May 31. Please note
that a student who is older than 18 but is still in high school or just
completed high school is still eligible to compete. A student who has
completed their first year of college but is still 18 as of May 31 is
not eligible.
6 & UNDER (aka "SHRIMPS"):
Swimmers will swim one length of freestyle, but their
results are not scored as part of the meet. A swim evaluation will be
held prior to preseason practice. Swimmers in this age group need be
able to swim 20 feet unassisted when practice begins in May. Ribbons
will be given for the first through fourth place winners. All others
will be given a participation ribbon.
8 & UNDER: These swimmers must be able to swim
one length of the pool freestyle, with ease, and be able to demonstrate
the capability of one other stroke.
9 - 10: Swimmers in this group should be
familiar with all competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke,
breaststroke, and butterfly) and be prepared to perfect their form under
the guidance of our experienced coaches. It is not necessary to be
proficient in all strokes, or to be an expert swimmer. These swimmers
may also enter the 100 meter IM (Individual Medley - one length of the
pool each of butterfly, back, breast, and freestyle).
11 and UP: These swimmers have the same
requirements as the 9-10 group except they must swim two pool lengths
(50 meters) for each event entered except IM which will be 100 meters.
TEAM SUITS: Team suits are not required, but are highly
recommended. They enhance team unity and team spirit. New suits are
selected every two years. You may purchase suits during the designated
period at sign-ups. Caps and goggles are of great benefit to all
swimmers. Caps keep the hair out of their face and mouth while swimming.
With long hair, a child needs to wear a cap or a ponytail during meets.
Goggles help reduce the burn from chlorinated water. Caps from year
round programs and suits with an imprinted high school name are not permitted at
summer league meets.
PRACTICES: Practices are held in the afternoons before
school ends and in the mornings for the rest of the season. It is
important to have your swimmer at practice. Please let a coach know
when you will miss. Please refer to practice schedule for exact times.
MEETS:
We swim in the Greater Charlotte Swim League. The meets
are held on Monday or Thursday evenings during June. There will be six regular season meets, three at Sardis, and three away.
There will be an intra-squad "Ribbon Meet" to score the baseline times
for swimmers. There is also an All-Star Meet at the end of the season
for swimmers that qualify. In order to swim in the All-Star Meet, a
swimmer must have participated in at least two meets during the season
and have swum in at least three events per meet.
The order of events in all dual meets is Shrimp freestyle, medley relay,
freestyle, backstroke, individual medley, breaststroke, butterfly, and
freestyle relay.
Meets start at 6:00, so
please have your swimmer at the meet by 5:00. Shrimps are welcome
to leave after they swim but the older kids are encouraged to stay for
the whole meet to cheer on the team. Please bring plenty of dry towels and
change of clothes for the swimmers to all meets.
Swimmers in all age groups may swim 3 individual events and 2
relays. If your swimmer does not swim in a relay, he/she can only swim
3 events. The IM is considered an
individual event. A swimmer may move up one age group in relays only,
but each relay team must have at least two swimmers of the proper age
for that group. There will be no substitutions if a swimmer of that age
group is present at the meet. If a swimmer moves up an age group to swim a relay, it will not count in his/her number of events.
Each race of a group of swimmers is called a Heat. Faster heats are
usually first. Heat assignments are made by the Hy-tek computer
program according to the swimmer’s time. A swimmer from any heat may win
the race. Usually the home team uses the odd numbered lanes and the
visiting team uses the even lanes. The clerk of course may alter this
during the course of a meet for expediency.
Ribbons will be given for 1st - 4th place event
winners including shrimps. Ribbons are given out to the 1st
and 2nd place for relays. Best time ribbons will be given
out whenever a swimmer improves his/her times. Heat ribbons winners are
given out to swimmers ages 10 and under. All shrimps are given
participation ribbons upon completion of their race. All swimmers will
receive a participant trophy at the end of season banquet.
We are responsible for
delivering completed heat sheets to
the other team 24 hours before the meet.
If you are unable to attend a meet due to illness, please alert a
coach as soon as possible. If you are unable to attend for any other reason, please
notify the coach at least one week prior to the meet.
WEATHER:
All teams must report for scheduled meets regardless of weather.
Meets can be postponed by mutual consent of the clubs involved. No
meet can be postponed until 30 minutes after the scheduled starting
times. If the IM has been completed, the meet may be considered
completed, if both teams agree. Meets may be made up on any day that is
acceptable to both teams.
